Rhodes: the perfect island for trekking in Greece

A voyage of discovery through picturesque villages, Hellenic culture and uncontaminated nature

With its uncontaminated natural landscapes and splendid beaches, Rhodes is a great attraction for hikers. The island is the perfect place for a holiday, permitting alternation of trekking and day trips with true relaxation. This is made possible by the variety of the island’s attractions: from splendid quiet beaches to rocky landscapes reached along stony paths, from historic towns to little mountain villages, a vacation on the island of Rhodes is never boring!

The island’s cities have plenty to offer, and can be toured on foot, visiting the historic attractions and splendid testimony of this ancient civilisation. A day in the city of Rhodes is an essential part of any trip. The old city of Rhodes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site offering spectacular glimpses of medieval lanes and ancient monuments. A tour of the Palace of the Grand Masters, the Street of Knights, the Hospital of the Knights and many more sites of historic interest might end with a visit to the acropolis or to Rodini Park, only 3 km from the city, or some time in the city’s museums (archaeological and Byzantine), beaches or markets. Another urban centre popular with hikers is the characteristic little village of Lindos, built more than 4000 years ago, with its winding lanes just waiting to be explored.

For a more natural trekking experience, visit Petaloudes, the Valley of the Butterflies, and discover a truly magical landscape, admiring the swarms of butterflies that cover the vegetation in summer. Heading down from here to the southeast, you will come to another beautiful green area: the wood known as Epta Piges, or seven springs. This splendid area, with its plane trees and pines, is perfect for admiring the local flora and fauna; a walk through the woods takes you to Archangelos, about 9 km away.

The island of Rhodes truly has a thousand different scenarios to offer, with countless hiking excursions in discovery of beautiful and fascinating places.
